Adopt

Why is foster first better?

A French bulldog, a black and white cat, and a cream-colored kitten are cuddled together on a dark green pillow, on a couch with a floral wallpaper background.

When most people think of adopting a pet, they think of rows of cages full of animals and people choosing a pet from the line up.

These can be stressful environments for animals. Kennels are noisy, bright, and clinical with strange people coming and going. Very few animals behave naturally in these settings so it’s hard to know their true personality.

Our fosters work hard to socialise our animals and allow them to experience normal family life. From toilet training, basic manners and social interactions, fosters teach our pets everything they need to know. In turn, we can recognise them as individuals and understand what they might need when adopted.

When you apply to adopt with PAW Society, we take the time to understand your lifestyle as well so we can easily match you to the right pet.

This results in a more reliable match and prevents our animals from being stuck in a cycle of rescue and return.

THE ADOPTION PROCESS

The first step to rescuing a pet with PAW Society is to complete an application form using the link below. If you would prefer to complete a paper form and return it to us by post, please contact us to request this.

Your application form gives us helpful insights into your lifestyle and home dynamics. For safeguarding purposes, we’ll ask you to submit proof of address, photo ID, and photos of your home and garden. People in rented accommodation must also provide written consent form their landlord to adopt a pet.

A homecheck will be conducted via The Animal Team - a charity providing volunteer services to animal rescues. The volunteer may recommend some remedial work to ensure your home is safe for a rescue animal, for example, installing sturdy high fencing in your garden.

After your homecheck is approved, you’ll attend an informal call with our animal behaviour experts. We’ll provide advice on how to best settle an animal into your new home and answer all of your burning questions.

Finally, we use everything we’ve learnt about you during the application process to suggest a match for you. If you agree with our suggestion, we’ll invite you to meet the pet in their foster placement. We ask that adult-only homes visit once as a minimum, and those with children under 12 visit twice. Additional visits can be arranged if required.

Our expert team are on hand for advice and support throughout and beyond your adoption journey. Our tried and tested method has resulted in hundreds of successful adoptions over the years with an extremely low rate of returns.
